Session 5
Task
A
Critique
an animation in terms of its quality based on the principles argued by Mayer
and Moreno in the article recommended.
I find the animation ‘Twitter Explained’ good.
This is the link to the animation
This animation follows all of
Mayer’s and Moreno’s principles.
- Multimedia principle – Throughout the video
clip, the use of animation and narration is extensively applied. This
enables the viewer to create mental connections, which plays a role in
enhancing their understanding of Twitter.
- Spatial Contiguity – Throughout the clip,
on-screen text is provided next to the portion of the animation so as to
build mental connections between words and pictures, with reference to 0.30
to 0.36 seconds in the animation.
- Temporal Contiguity Principle – Throughout
the clip, narration and animation are presented at the same time, which
enables the viewer’s working memory to make mental connections, with
reference to 1.03 to 1.10 in the animation.
- Coherence Principle – Throughout the clip,
no extraneous words and images are included. The language is simple to
understand.
- Modality Principle – Throughout the clip,
the emphasis is placed on animation and narration and the use of on-screen
text is minimal, which functions to state what an image refers to or to
enhance retention of keywords, with reference to 0.43 to 1.02 seconds in
the animation. This ensures that a viewer’s visual channel is not overfull.
- Redundancy principle – This principle is
followed throughout the clip as there is emphasis on animation and
narration, and both are presented simultaneously. This ensures a strong
and steady effect.
- Personalization principle – Throughout the
clip, there is the use of conversation elements such as a human voice and
the use of the second person construction “you.” This also helps create a
personal connection with the listener / viewer.
As this animation follows all of Mayer’s and Moreno’s principles,
it can therefore be considered a good animation.
